Handyman in West Fargo, ND

West Fargo sits right against Fargo's western edge, and with roughly 38,600 people in the 2020 census it's now the fifth-largest city in North Dakota. It started as a Northern Pacific whistle stop called Sheyenne Crossing, grew up around a meatpacking plant that Armour and Company ran until 1960, and merged with neighboring Riverside in 1989. That history shows in the older core near Sheyenne Street and Main Avenue, where modest homes from the 1950s through the 1970s sit on established streets with mature trees, many of them ranches and split-levels with full basements. Most of West Fargo, though, is new. The city grew by more than 70 percent in the 2000s alone, and subdivisions have spread south past I-94 toward 40th Avenue and beyond, with places like Brooks Harbor and The Wilds filling with two-story homes, twin homes and townhomes, plus apartment buildings along the main corridors. That makes for two very different kinds of work: aging-house repairs in the old town, and the first round of fixes and upgrades in homes that are often less than fifteen years old. In the newer homes, the framing lumber dries and shrinks through the first few heating seasons, and the heavy clay soil under every lot in the valley swells and shrinks with the weather, so nail pops, hairline cracks at drywall corners, doors drifting out of adjustment and builder-grade fixtures coming loose are all part of the normal settling-in process. None of it usually means something is seriously wrong; it just needs a careful hand.

West Fargo's map is easy to read. Sheyenne Street runs north and south through the middle of town and carries much of its traffic and shopping, Main Avenue and 13th Avenue tie it to Fargo, and I-94 cuts across with the newer neighborhoods spreading south of it along Veterans Boulevard and 9th Street. The Sheyenne River winds along the west side, and the Sheyenne Diversion, built in the early 1990s, carries floodwater around the city and Horace. The Red River Valley Fairgrounds host the fair each summer and the Big Iron farm show each September, which fills the roads with farm traffic and visitors, and Bonanzaville next door preserves pioneer buildings, a church, a schoolhouse and log cabins from around the region. West Fargo Public Schools are a big part of daily life here; the district has grown fast enough to keep opening new elementary and middle schools, and the Packers name still nods to the old meatpacking days. Families here tend to be busy and practical, and most of the requests we get reflect that: get it done right, get it done in one trip, and don't leave a mess in the new house.

What West Fargo neighbors book most

West Fargo is a short drive down Main Avenue or across on 13th Avenue for us, and we work there constantly, from the old streets near Sheyenne Street to the newest cul-de-sacs south of the interstate.

Jobs we handle a lot around West Fargo

In West Fargo's newer neighborhoods the list usually starts with TVs mounted over fireplaces and in basements, ceiling fans added in bedrooms and great rooms, garage shelving and wall storage for bikes, sports gear and snow blowers, and smart thermostats and hardwired video doorbells. Then come the settling-in repairs: nail pops and corner cracks, doors that need re-hanging or adjustment, and caulk lines that have pulled away at tubs and backsplashes. In the older homes near Sheyenne Street and Main Avenue, it's more often worn faucets and toilets, original bathroom fans and light fixtures that need replacing, interior doors and hardware that have loosened, and fences that have leaned after decades of frost. Across town we replace vinyl and cedar fence panels and gate latches that the winter wind has worked loose, clean gutters after the fall leaves drop, and pressure wash driveways and patios once the road salt and grit are gone in spring.

Questions we hear in West Fargo

My West Fargo house is only a few years old. Why are there cracks and nail pops already?

It's very common here and usually not a structural concern. New framing dries out over the first couple of winters when the furnace runs hard and the air gets very dry, and the clay soil under the slab and footings swells and shrinks with the seasons. That combination shows up as nail pops in ceilings, hairline cracks running off the corners of doors and windows, and doors that start to rub or stop latching. We set popped fasteners properly, tape and mud the cracks, match the texture and paint, and adjust doors so they close cleanly again. It's best to wait until the house has been through a couple of heating seasons, then do it all in one visit.

Can you finish projects the builder left undone?

Yes, and it's one of the most common requests we get in new West Fargo subdivisions. People move in with a list: a TV over the fireplace, ceiling fans where the builder left a light or a capped box, shelving and hooks in the garage, blinds, closet systems, a hardwired video doorbell and a smart thermostat. Our licensed electricians take care of the fan and fixture connections, and we work through the rest of the list in the same visit so the house finally feels finished.

My vinyl fence has a section that blew loose. Can you fix it?

Usually, yes. Vinyl privacy fences are everywhere in the newer West Fargo subdivisions, and the strong prairie wind finds any weakness, popping rails out of posts or cracking panels in the cold when vinyl gets brittle. We reseat or replace rails and panels, secure posts that have loosened, and replace broken caps and gate hardware. If a post has heaved with the frost, we reset it so the line runs straight again. Bring us the brand if you know it; matching parts makes the repair invisible.

Can you hang shelving on the garage walls in a new house?

Yes. We find the studs, use hardware rated for the load and build shelving, wall rails and ceiling racks around how you actually use the garage, keeping clear paths for the car doors and room for the snow blower. In an attached garage we also check the wall between the garage and the house so we don't compromise it.
