Drywall Repair in Fargo, ND

Fargo walls take a beating that has little to do with doorknobs. The whole Red River Valley sits on heavy lakebed clay that swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries out, and the frost works several feet into it every winter. Houses ride that movement, and the walls show it: diagonal cracks running off the corners of doors and windows, seams that open along the ceiling, nail and screw pops in new construction as the framing dries through its first heating seasons. Add the bone-dry indoor air of a long January and the humid swing of July, and drywall and plaster crack in places they've cracked before. Then there are the ordinary hazards: a doorknob through the wall, a stain from an ice dam or a slow leak upstairs, a hole where a contractor ran a cable.

We repair each problem the right way for what caused it. Popped fasteners get reset and a new screw driven beside them, cracks get cut back, taped with the right tape for the location and feathered out, and holes get a proper backing so the patch stays solid. For water damage, we find out whether the leak is stopped before we patch anything, cut out soft or stained board and seal the area so the stain doesn't bleed through. Then we match the texture, whether it's smooth, orange peel, knockdown or a ceiling spray, prime and paint to blend. We lay drop cloths, contain dust as we sand and leave the room clean.

What this covers

  • Settling cracks at door, window and ceiling corners
  • Nail and screw pop repair in new and older homes
  • Holes from doorknobs, anchors and moving furniture
  • Water and ice-dam stain repair after the leak is fixed
  • Lath and plaster crack and section repair
  • Texture matching: smooth, orange peel, knockdown and ceiling spray
  • Corner bead and outside corner repair
  • Priming and paint blending over the repair
  • Drop cloths, dust control and cleanup
A note from around here: Newer homes in south Fargo, Osgood and West Fargo show nail pops and corner cracks after their first couple of winters, while older houses in Hawthorne, Roosevelt and Horace Mann have lath and plaster that cracks along the same lines every year as the clay below swells and shrinks.

How a drywall repair visit usually goes

Look and Diagnose

We check what caused the damage, whether it's settling, a leak, an impact or a popped fastener, and confirm that any moisture source is stopped before we patch.

Prepare the Area

We lay drop cloths, move what needs moving, cut back loose or damaged material and set up dust control before sanding.

Patch and Finish

We secure or replace the damaged material, tape and mud in thin coats, sand smooth and match the surrounding texture.

Prime, Paint and Clean

We prime the repair, paint to blend with the wall and clean up so the room is ready to use.

Timing matters here. Many Fargo homeowners notice new cracks in late winter, when the furnace has run for months and the air is at its driest, or in spring, when the frost comes out of the ground and the clay is saturated with snowmelt. The house often settles back somewhat by summer. If you have a lot of cracks in a newer home, it's worth waiting until the house has been through two heating seasons and then fixing them all at once. For older homes in Hawthorne or the north side neighborhoods, we often find old repairs that were simply caulked or spackled, and we redo those properly.

What shapes the price in Fargo

Drywall repair cost comes down to how many spots there are, how large they are and what the wall looks like around them. A few nail pops and hairline cracks in one room take far less time than a dozen cracks across a whole floor. Large holes need backing and more coats. Water damage means cutting out board and treating stains. Textured walls and ceilings take longer to match than smooth ones, and high ceilings or stairwells need more ladder work. Plaster takes more time than drywall. Doing the whole house's patching in one visit, with paint, is almost always the most economical approach because each coat needs drying time anyway.

Neighbors often ask

Why does the same crack keep coming back over my door?

Because the house keeps moving there. Door and window openings are where the framing is interrupted, so seasonal movement from the clay soil and from wood drying and swelling concentrates at those corners. A crack that was simply filled with spackle will reopen. We cut it back, bed paper or mesh tape in setting compound that holds better than premixed mud, and feather it wide so the stress spreads out. It won't make the house stop moving, but it makes the repair far more likely to stay closed.

Can you fix a ceiling stain from an ice dam?

Yes, once the source is handled. Ice dams form when heat escaping through the attic melts snow on the roof and the water refreezes at the cold eaves, backing up under the shingles. After the roof is dry and any leak is dealt with, we check whether the drywall is still sound. If it's firm, we seal the stain with a stain-blocking primer and repaint. If it's soft or sagging, we cut out the damaged section, patch it, match the texture and finish it.

Do you work on plaster walls?

Yes. Many older Fargo homes have original lath and plaster. We re-secure loose plaster with plaster washers, fill cracks with materials that bond to it, and skim the repair to blend. Where a section is too far gone, we patch with board shimmed to match the wall thickness so the surface stays flat.

Is a crack in my drywall a sign of foundation trouble?

Usually not. Hairline cracks at corners, seams and over doors are normal movement in a house on Red River Valley clay. Signs worth a closer look include cracks wider than a pencil line that keep growing, doors that suddenly stop closing, floors that slope more each year, or a basement wall that bows inward. If we see any of that, we'll point it out plainly so you can have it evaluated.

Can you match the texture on my ceiling?

In most cases, yes. Orange peel and knockdown can be matched closely with the right tools and practice, and we test on a scrap before committing. Popcorn ceilings can be patched with spray texture. If an older ceiling may contain asbestos, which is possible in homes built before the 1980s, we'll suggest testing before we disturb it.
